Something I learned, that made it a bit more... easier, for the lack of a better word right now.

Figure out the targets base course they are on, then run out ahead on a somewhat similar heading...

ex. Say a single target, is found to be on a course of say... 120 degrees, I would then having a line drawn out to that direction, 1k to 2k long from the target... with Me, thus far... if so, good.

I then go to flank, on that same heading of 120... so as to get out ahead of them & when I've got a comfortable lead on them, I then slow to Standard... then start a run in, to lay in wait on a 90 degree tangent i.e My bow is facing 30 degrees to their passing by roughly 1500 yards or 5000 feet from where they will pass by. I then stay surfaced (unless a plane shows up to where I have to dive...) barring a plane showing up... I wait for them to get around close enough to be spotted, I then check the course heading they are on... make any minor adjustments that are needed. when they close to around 8,000 or so distant, I then submerge...

Pop the scope, get a read on what the target is... (In this example, let's say we got lucky & ran across a L. Tanker) I find it in the recognition manual, I make note of the draft of it, which in this case, is 29.2, I then set the torp up for (4 feet below the keel for playing as a U.S. skipper, or 10.5 to 11 meters (2 meters below the ships keel, for playing as a Uboat Kaleun) a under the ship mag det kill shot. That's for torp 1... With a tanker, looking at that 1 as being a 2 torp kill shot. I then set the 2nd 1 up, for side impact... setting the depth to 1/2 of what the from the water to the bottom of the ships keel is.. again, 29.2 so I then go for 14.6 or 5 to 5.5 meters depth. I drop the scope after getting the basic details of what the target is, & then do all the set ups for the torps, including opening the doors to the tubes I am going to use for the attack... just to clarify that here & now...

Now that I have all that info, I only pop up the scope, take a quick peek, ensure the target has't changed course.. I do this until the target gets inside a 30 degree of dead zero... (in this case 330 on the compass rose inside the periscope, as the target is coming in from My left to right...) I do a quick check to make sure all is in order, after making sure all is in order, I then fire off the 2 torps, drop scope & I wait a bit, til just before the 1st should hit or in the case of a mag det, explode... barring it being a dud, that is.. I do play with duds in the option menu, thank you... they did have them early on in the war... I pop scope, take a quick look & see what the results are from the 1st fish & the incoming 2nd fish... if all was successful, it should be a sunk & done...if not, then I either send off 1 more torp or surface & send My DG crew to stations & finish it off that way. If all was successful with the 2 torp attack, I then surface, head off back on My base course & wait a bit, before radioing in of it... That's a planned attack, with a single ship.

As for a convoy, or task force... somewhat similar, but with more... caution thrown in for good measure... since there will be more ships, more eyes... an more chances to get detected, if not careful, more so, if there are DD escorts with the convoy...

Hope this helps... & hope I didn't lose you in all that.. I do apologize for the long length of it... again, hopefully you find it helpful.
