I somehow doubt that a destroyer running at 33 knots would be able to reverse his propellors instantly, in part because of the geering boxes, and in part due to the fact that it would risk fracturing the shafts and propellors. Not to mention that everyone on board would have to wear some seat belts  )

Har - yea. The forces against the machinery could be great. On the other hand, the ocean has a lot of give against the propeller, right? I assume that this would dampen things a bit. It's not like the road against a tire (throwing yer tranny into reverse at high speed). Also - how fast is 40kts in kph (i.e. land vehicle speed)? A knot is like a mile, is it like a mile/hour? If so 40kts = ~65kph or so? At that speed slowing down a third of your speed isn't that severe (though I usually wear a seatbelt anyway). Maybe I've got the numbers all wrong. How fast do warships go, compared say, to cars?
I guess the issue is that the destroyers in this game have a virtually instantaneous reduction in speed, which is probably impossible.
