First, being in the military, if you blow the "whistle" for any reason you better follow the chain of command, and if you do jump the chain of command, you better have all your ducks in a row, or you'll be seen as nothing more than a disgruntled employee.

Having been in the military, I've seen my share of members "go outside the chain of command" for redress, and more often than not once the dust settled they were transfer'd off the base either to civilian life or another command. Col. Vindman's treatment is not extraordinary. Odds are he will announce his retirement in the near future.
