The most I knew was that Canada was part of the Commonwealth navy, that was responsible for removing the U-boat threat from our shores. And pretty much nothing else. So the idea of radar, that the allies had it, took me as much by surprise as the Germans themselves. Yes, absolutely, as has been said, Hitler's U-boat war is required reading, just to have a chance.
Once refined versions of the shipboard and aircraft detection radars became widespread, about late 1943, I leave nothing to chance when it comes to how detectable my sub is, including the raised periscope and/or snorkel mast.
When I need to be reminded, I center the compass tool on the boat, and then draw the range out to 80km, and say, "even in bad weather, the eye in the sky can spot me from here".
It's pretty sobering.
As the tarnematte and alberich coatings were generally useless, I don't waste any renown points to upgrade on them. I don't know about the mods or hacks others have done over the years to make these "improvements" more effective, but I no longer fall into the trap of artificial security about being spotted, as I once did.

Radar is why I only do submerged attacks once it comes about and those only during daylight. I've never been able to find any reference to an actual night submerged attack, so I don't do them.
But it's not difficult to do day attacks; submerge ahead of the convoy and go to town once they show up. I like getting into the convoy to make the escorts job harder once I've attacked.
In many such attacks I've done in numerous campaigns, only been "caught" and sunk once. Haven't found radar to be much trouble actually.
Re scope being picked up by radar, etc. I've always thought that tech wasn't doable until the '70s.
Hope it doesn't happen in the game. Or am I mistaken ?
I've never noticed it happening in the game, and I don't bother with the snorkel much.
