it gets even finickyier when rushing back up the ladder to the bridge from the deck gun position as a plane is homing your position. I usually do my own gunnnery since it saves shells. Even at highest performance levels you're still better than the gun crew. Using Kretschmer's "one eel, one ship" and finishing the cripples with the deckgun extends the patrol tonnage. Decks awash, whenever possble, gets your feet wet but shortens crash-dive evasive maneuver times. In heavy seas fire on the downroll!
