A few meters abouve PD, e.g. snorkel depth at 10 m will get you detected and prosecuted. Even at PD, in rough weather, you risk broaching which is not particularly stealthy.

Just starting to get to grips with the end of '43 myself. Generally I use snorkel to get ahead of the target(s) (with periscope up looking for aircraft!). Then move in at PD at 2 knots to finialise the position.

Shoot and scoot. The moment the eels are on the way, 60-90 degree turn and depth, rig for silent (to get out of the position the escorts will look for you). i.e. Clear Datum! Sneak well away and re-aquire, if you're game.
