Opening the Missile Tube Hatches
Yes you can hear them open, when you open the Hatch (doors) you are already at launch depth and are hovering, speed 4kts or less. The Boomers I was on that launched (for test or coming out of the yards) were essentially stationary The Boomers have an auto system for this maneuver and it is really extremely good. You can do it manually, but the hover system is really accurate.
The launch is loud (big time) and the whole boat shudders, and the compensation system is flooding to accommodate the weight change. It is really an amazing evolution.
I was lucky enough to be on one of the observation ships once and got to see the missile light of and go, boy that was exciting. I don't think many people know that this system, on US Boats, is like a fine watch, this whole thing happens so fast and the boat hardly changes depth. The system monitors sea state, drift factors, and what I found so amazing was when things happen, bird starts to move the maylar cord fires breaking the membrane, at so many inches flooding of the compenstion system starts. I would have like to learn more but much of it was and probably still is secret.
I would have like to been on one that did a ripple fire. I only experienced single shots. I bet that was exciting.
