The problem is balancing your depth, versus being hunted.
It's almost impossible.
If you incur severe damage on the surface, diving will be a fatal outcome. I lost my last boat that way.
The objective, according to the U-Boat Commander Handbook, is "to see first! He who sees first wins."
You must not be detected at all until the moment the torpedo hits.
So how I play, if I can't sneak in, then wait for the opportunity! If I'm being deckgunned by a destroyer, I made a bad move.
You can play with the diveplanes and ballast all day, but you will never shake the escorts because of the noise.
Do not be detected!
