My new tv has a function called "Wide" and Full zoom 1 and 2. It resolved the issue I had when loading up SH3. Before that I was loading SH3 at 1024 but the screen was not being used completely. Check your tv if it has that option. Mine has the option to maintain aspect ratio in "Wide" mode. I can now load SH3 Silent Service 2 as well and SH1 in full screen mode. Now the periscope/TBT/UZO markings for ranging I haven't tested if there is a distortion for its usage.
