Being on line allowed you to see other players games and progress.
KSD is still functional for your game.
Your medals and performance are recorded here taken from your saved games.

2) my U-boat has no name/number. I looked in thread on it but got lost on the how to.

If you have already started a mission or are in the bunker then KSD will have allocated you a U-Boat number.
Click on your Captain's name in KSD and the middle panel will show your U-Boat number.
For you to see it in your game you will need to make changes in the OFEV ships Journal TAB.
