It is your boat. If you keep your bow or stern to the enemy he will have be less likely to detect you.
This will be more of a night occurance (maybe heavy weather) but as you get closer the less room for manouvering you have. For example, if we said that at 6000 metres you had about 30 degrees then at 2000 metres is may be only 10 degrees.
