I just reloaded the TWOS patch onto the game a second time and it has fixed the text issues.
I noticed on the first installment I had to identify the path for SH5 about 9 times. The second installation was just clicking yes to the proposed installed path; perhaps the file was badly loaded first time.

All is well except now despite the Real Navigation switched on, I can see my sub position on the map!
