I wonder if SH4 or SH5 (with mods) comes close or are perhaps even better than SH3 GWX by now or does SH3 GWX still carry the crown?

The Wolves Of Steel is the ultimate mega mod for SH5 and takes the game to whole new level and 100% ctd free.

SH4 you have a lot more choice and it depends on what you want from the game.
My SH4 mega mod based on GFO is well worth a look as is FOTRSU.
The TMO mega mod with RSRDC ups the difficulty level.
