Pretty much all maneuvering problems can be solved using trigonometry. A quick glance through the maneuvering board manual should be evidence of that, as you will see that the solution to nearly every problem involves drawing a triangle.
It's worth noting that these same procedures can be used to figure out firing solutions for torpedoes as well.
