Yeah, that was a big one, they are lucky it wasn't even bigger.
One of the most famous volcanoes is the one that wiped out Pompeii back in Roman times (1st century). It has erupted many times since then and is still active as recent as the mid 1940's.
They say it is overdue for another huge eruption yet people still move back to it. If Mount Vesuvius erupted today, it could threaten more than 3 million people and wipe out the city of Naples.
