SHO A visit to H.M.S ťOtusŤ, Oberon class

We had a short holiday to the island of Ruegen, Germany, and among other things visited the (now) museum submarine H.M.S. Otus, moored in the harbour of Sassnitz. (Had to make a test drive with the 'new' car, this was really a great and fuzz-free tour, the Xantia really 'flies' with its HP suspension)

We had a guided walking tour on the enclosed peninsula of 'Bug' (meaning bow, in german) by a former NVA officer (east german army/navy) in the rank of commander, telling us a lot of the history from WW1, 2 and the cold war times. This was really interesting, tons of information also on the soviet missile boats stationed there, and U-boat hunting. It had been a military area for most of its time, and is now restricted because of having become an integral nature reserve. The tons of midgets were free of charge

Later we visited the harbour of Sassnitz, we had been there already sailing from Kiel in 1990, shortly after the reunification of Germany, and lord has this city changed since then! Otus was decommissioned in the early 1990s and resided at Pound's scrapyard in Portsmouth for several years. She was later purchased by a German entrepreneur who moored her to Germany and did some restoration work in a dry dock, before she was taken to Sassnitz. The submarine can be visited all day, and has received a lot of attention and preservation.

Some photos are already here: Otus

Will add more but Imgur is a bit sluggish, and not easy to configure. (i guess this is the IT way of keeping people alert and trying, instead of simply offering reasonable and easily-understandable functions )
