It IS a mine, or a subnet. When you hit one it doesn't tell you, you just die.
You either need to follow the escort ship all the way out until he turns back, take a look at the harbor maps (included in the Additional Mods section) or install the No Mines SCR (also in Additional Mods). Me, I like to follow the escort in real time.
