I think that what you say is true but there is another factor and it is common among all the 'identity groups' angling for public attention. There is a culture of victim hood which poisons any approach to justice. People increasingly demand help from others, and advertise their oppression as evidence that they deserve respect and assistance. It is an easy step then to brand any 'oppressors' as racist, homophobic etc.
The funny thing about this case is that Starbucks is one of the most liberal corporations in America. They are on the 'progressive' side of almost every issue from the environment to fair trade. Requiring all of their staff to have racial-bias training is a bit much. My guess is that they are far more concerned about losing business than they are about changing the minds of a few racists that might work for them.
