Back in the early 80's I was fortunate enough to be picked to be detailed to her security team. Specifically, I was a military EOD detailee on her secondary security team. This meant that I spent most of my time not where the Second Lady was, but where she was going to be next.

But at the end of the detail, we got a chance to grip and grin with the President, First Lady, VP and Second Lady.

Mrs. Bush was a classy lady. Very confident in her position and that made her comfortable with the support people. Her office published her schedule and she tried very hard to stick with it. This makes security a lot smoother.

At the end of the detail, she was the only one of the four that actually thanked us for what we did. She knew her position and we knew ours and everything worked smoothly.

She was considerate and understanding when it came to the minions.

I don't think we make them like this any more. She was old school in the most complementary manner.

I suspect that George won't be long before following her.
