Stiers was a very skilled actor and brought a nuance to the character of Maj. Winchester very few other actors could have achieved. Where Maj. Burns was a pretty narrow character with virtually no humane aspects, Winchester, even as he suffered through his 'exile', retained a sense of humanity and moral compass belied by his snobbish exterior. It takes a very talented actor to pull off such a range without it appearing cartoonish or cloying. Throughout his stint on MASH, Stiers had several moments where he was able to show the human side of Winchester:
