anyone had experience with these for this printer or similar. I am a little dubious as I have heard they can screw up print heads etc. I know they are half the price but I'm wondering if this is a situation where buying original is better and worth the extra price.

Also can anyone recommend any decent sites online. Us sites aswell as UK if shipping charges aren't too bad.
If you depend on professional printing results of extremly good quality, you cannot avoid testing different inks and their interaction with different kinds of paper. On my old printer I use third-party-cartridges of a well-known manufacturer, they costed half as mjuch, nealry, than those of Epson. the printer lived close to ten years Now using a new Canon model, which is very good, but the cartridges are chip-coded, so third-party offers are not available anymore.

If you don't order some dubious ink from a direct Chinese supply line I doubt you run any serious risk to "damage" your printer. Just use a decent third party-product, not just some dubious no-name stuff.
