The problem being that female surname-change isn't that common a 'gender-role norm' in 'Western' societies (as claimed) and the paper is US-centric in that regard (there are different traditions in the UK, for instance, despite the paper claiming a single mode): not to mention that the very idea of a surname is not universal either (one might consider Scotland, where you can call yourself what you like, without using a Deed Poll or other legal device).
