Just about exactly 180 from your pos. there, say 6 or 7 km is where they often are.
I've never waited in a port for ships to come. Just a sense from the game I guessed it would be unlikely or very rare. You are better off returning and going back next patrol, I think.
But yeah, you don't have to go that far in as far as I know. Others may have seen otherwise. Not sure.

like he said, u will probably have to move out a bit more. at Loch Ewe there are destroyers moored in the docks but i've never noticed that in stock SH3 Scapaflow.
