In Australia "Tribalism" is very big, and has been for generations. Cars - Holdens vs Falcons, Politics - Labor vs Liberals , just 2 examples I can think of at the moment.
I grew up in the working class town of Wallsend NSW . People worked either at the Steelworks or the coalmines. This was late 50s early 60s.
The music on the wireless ( no transistors yet ) was mainly Bigband stuff.
Then "RockaBilly" came along and got a big following ( Rockers ).
Then about mid 60s the whole "English/British music scene" really took off and to be a "Mod" was very fashionable.
This is just my "take" on things. How I remember it.
The Mods and Rockers were always on the news both in England and here in Australia.
