Not to revive an old thread, but the subject and headline fits what I was to ask about.
In the same handbook - and I have both the original german and the 1943 translation book, and it does not seem to be "lost in translation"
I have tried several times to draw up the "situation" described in item 131:

Zur rechtzeitigen Bestimmung des Querabstandes Vom Gegner beim Schuß gilt folgende Faustregel als Anhalt:
Bei 5° Lage beträgt der Querabstand vom Gegner = 1/10 der augenblicklichen Entfernung,
bei 10° Lage = 1/5
bei 15° Lage = ¼,
bei 20° Lage = 1/3
bei 30° Lage = ½ der Entfernung.

The following rule of thumb serves to determine, in good time, the

when angle on the bow is 20° = 1/3
when angle on the bow is 30° = 1/2 of the momentary distance

These are the approximate values calculated from the sines of the angle
on the bow. The calculated values are used to determine distance to the
target in the moment of the torpedo launch for angle on the bow equal
to 90°

The only situation I can get to fit this is if your driving your uboot away from the ship, so the AOB gets larger, as does the momentary distance.
There HAS to be a genious out there that can draw this up, so even I can get my head around it...
