1. He is not left enough.
2. He has a realistic view on things. Germans prefer to replace realistic perception with wishful thinking. Germans do not want to be associated with things like military, war, masculinity (this is not to imply that maculinity is a condensate of military or that the military is the only way in wich masculinity manifestate itself).

Last two times Creveld was in Germany to hold lectures at university, student mobs sealed of the campus and prevented other students to attend (so much for free speech), Creveld was driven away and even the invitation by one university was in one other case cancelled by the university officials. He could not speak.

Creveld is one of the most influential and profound military historians of the present. I know some of his other books, too. Namely "Fighting Power" is a brilliant analysis of the competences and deficits of the German Wehrmacht and the US army in WWII, but though very competent it is a bit dry to read. I also can only recommend "The Culture of War". Most of his other books seem to be more specifically focussed on certain aspects of war and military: logistics, or air strategy. I do not know these.

If matter like this interests you, I have another author for you, John Keegan. "The history of warfare" reflects - amongst other aspects touched by the author - the warrior's mentality and its changes over the different eras of history.

In Israel he is not liked becasue he does not save Israel from telling it that its strategic position is so vulnerable and exposed over the long run that its ongoing existence in the long perspective is highly questionable.

van Creveld is no rightwinger or hidden Nazi (what he also was accused of already, despite the fact that he is Jew and Israeli citizen, he just has a very competent background in data and knowledge and he refuses to censor his logical concusions on the grounds of demands from mainstream opinion manipulators. In Germany dsiagreeing with the left Zeitgeist is enough to label you as a Nazi, rightwinger, X-Y-Z-phobic. Rational and independent thought today is an arch sin. You have to think with the crowd: feminstic, gender-correct, socialistic, servile to the paternalistic nanny-state.

I currently read a German book by a German author, about the relation of the devasted German national soul the German craving for self-denial, and the Jewish present generation refusing to play the part the German selfhaters have reserved for them in their distorted world view. Every nanny needs a baby that agrees to polay the part of the helpelss little thing in need of beign nursed and lectured and educated, and if the entity chosen for that role denies to play that part, like young Jews do regarding Germany, than the anny will never forgive this loss of control and power this refusal means. The book is so much in violation of the German self-hating cult that several book shops and the nation's primary besteseller list by Der Spiegel censored it and deleted it from the lists and selling displays. The author again does not comply with the Zeitgeist and the mainstream opinion that is wanted over here, and meanwhile, at the age of 60-something, committed suicide, probably in resignation and disgust. The book is briliant in language and lasersharp and unforgivable in thought. And yes, they labelled it as Nazi-propaganda. Everybody agreeing with that, obviously has not read it carefully
enough. R.P. Sieferle: Finis Germania.
