The Steam version can be made to work as well as the Amazon, as well as the Ubisoft download, as well as the DVD version. For all of them, the main thing is to stay out of Windows Protected folders. Do NOT install any version of Sh3, 4 or 5 in the Program Files directory. Windows, from Vista up through 10 will "roll back" a lot of the changes made in a Protected folder, especially to exe, dll and cfg files, of which there are a gob of the latter in SH4. This might be why RSRDC is doing the CTD dance on you. You also might have to "Run as administrator" and / or pick an emulation mode on the SH4.exe Properties page. See some more of

The problem with the Steam version (of anything) is that you have to use Steam for updates, and with Silent Hunter 4, Steam does not have a v1.4 update. You have to buy ~their~ v1.5 UBoat Missions instead.
The Gold version was a good choice, especially for 5 smackers.
