generally speaking 10k tons is the target.
I am playing RSRD also. I had an assignment, go to zone and stay there for 72 hrs. As soon as I was in the zone, that mission completed, and I was given the sink ships job. First ship I got was a large modern tanker. As soon as it sank, I got the mission completed check mark. Tanker listed as 10001 tons.
Looks like all you need is 3k more, and you don't have to stay in the designated area either.
