the only way to know for sure is to open the game and look for the changes it makes
some mods add things that can make it easy to tell but most you cant except by playing the game and seeing the results of what the mod is supposed to do.
as berbster mentioned, many mods have double folders so you may have put the download in jsgme but not the correct mod file
for example a mod called green trees might have a download file called green trees and inside that folder there is a read me text file explaining the mod and what it does and how to use it. there might also be an image file and/or more then one file if the mod is designed to work for v1.4 game and another file for use with v1.5 game.
the way to tell it is the correct file is if you open up the mod folder and you should see the only file there called "data" and that is how you know that is the correct mod file to put into jsgme. so to recap, if the folder you put in jsgme opens up to show "green trees/green trees/data" then you put the wrong folder in and it will not work, if the folder you put in jsgme opens up to show "green trees/data" then you put the right folder in and it will work.
