We just visited the ruins of the firefighters' "barracks" (more like a palace http://www.ostia-antica.org/regio2/5/5-1.htm) in Ostia/Italy from the third century; fire has always been the greatest threat to people and their homes, and those who fought it were a very prestigious and respected lot of men already back then.
