The beeping heard during communications during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions is called a Quindar Tone.



It was developed by the Quindar Electronics company (hence the name) and was used to trigger remote transmitters around the world to transmit after the first tone and to stop transmitting after the second tone.

That is why conversations made by mission control started and ended with the Quindar Tone (if you listen carefully you can hear the different tone) but conversations made by the astronauts, did not have the tones. Why, well the astronauts only had a local transmitter -- the spacecraft!
