It's not possible to remove the slots since they are hardcoded, but you can hide them. Take a look at how I did it with the NYGM Crew Management Mod. Hint: Start at [G67 I464] in the NYGM 1024_768.ini, then look for DATA/Menu/Data/petsea04.tga and DATA/Menu/Data/petsea05.tga. There's also a hint on how to remove the bugged crew management buttons in there as well.
