A few years back, I worked with someone who is about my age who had just finally managed to quit smoking after having smoked since he was 16 years old; he had some down time on our project and he set up a spreadsheet to calculate an estimate of how much he had spent on ciggies and such; the final amount was very impressive and even more so when he used a US Gov't table to re-calculate the older dollars into today's dollars; for several days thereafter all we heard was him muttering things like "I coulda had a couple of really good cars!"..."I coulda had more for my house down payment!"... etc....

What was interesting was I had a similar experience with a musician acquaintance who had quit using drugs and had done a similar tally; IIRC, the totals were not that far off each other...
