Believe me, that's more realistic than anything in game. Nothing's wrong with that, happened to me a bunch of times before I realized my sneakiness wasn't enough against cruisers. Just don't panic when you are engaged, dive as fast as you can and avoid your enemy. They stop looking for you after 10 minutes usually.
No captain is perfect.
