Without this application SH5 is unplayable whether you add mods or play the stock game.
This is because unlike SH3 and SH4 which can be played with Steam without too many problems Ubisoft introduced a forced Uplay account, internet connection for game verification, Tonnage Bar, and Campaign Icons to the SH5 game.
If you buy SH5 to day and you get a broken game with the tonnage bar and Campaign Icons broken.
Adding mods to Steam is not a problem.
If you are new to SH5 look > > HERE << STEAM is not compatible with the essential application TDW’s Generic File Patcher

Just be sure and follow Peter's advice. In fact, it'd be a good idea to start reading up on it now while you wait for the purchase time. I also know all about the proper formula used in funds disbursement when kids are involved. Mine are 16 & 14 now, and they're in the process of eating us out of house and home. Now, for some reason, somethin' to do with Christmas I'm sure, my wife feels led to take her 23 yo nephew in. He's 6'7" of eating machine! My gosh! A gallon a day just in milk!

You should see what the young man can do with a large pizza!...

But it'll be fun
