Only in the movies. Only in the movies. When our sense of reality is based on a hokey anti-war movie (which incidentally has some authentic photography in it) then we're in big trouble.
Das Boot's primary thrust was anti-war, showing a sniveling group of angst-infected sailors, emotionally wrecked by the cruelty of war. It was a grave disservice to the real sailors, who served with toughness, resolve and competence. Especially hateful is the whiney war correspondentl, who would have been tossed in the drink by a real U-boat crew.
Das Boot has cool photography and some good comedy. End of good points in the movie. The rest is garbage. Imitating it is imitating foolishness.
