If your referring to that convoy when i started out... Well, i found myself on the starboard side of it. It was sure luck that
1.) i was so close to it.
2) i didnt get rammed.
I wanted to penetrate that convoy and get in between two columns to bring both my bow and stern tubes to bear, but it was too damn foggy, and the seas to rough. On top of that i was skeptical about the length of the IXD2 in between two columns. Yeah, i can probably squeeze it in there, but theres a good chance that i wont be giving my torpedos the 300 meter run they need to detonate.
With all that in mind, i opted to take what i could from the side of it. The first ship that crossed my bow, came out of the mist, and was gone again very quickly. By sonar i knew i had at least another 2 ships that were going to cross my bow. (goign from port to starboard side). So i waited for the second ship, to confirm guessed data from the first. The third ship was my LAST opportunity to fire, it was sort of a calculated gamble. Weather or no, i can't get in this close and not at least TRY to take one.
If it's any other ship in bad weather, the problem is
1.) I know what ships are by just looking at them. Play this game enough, and you don't need an identification book to know what the draft of a vessel is.
2.) ships tend to travel at known speeds. Entering the target speed is a matter of learned repition. (heh, i should probably try NYGM's mods.

I'm amazed by your deck gun efficiency. I might have to try the 10.5 again

Sea's have been consistantly rough for most of the patrol. I didn't want to risk hitting the part of the hull where the side curves round to from the bottom of the ship. A hit in such a location, the torpedo would deflect. ESPECIALLY on liberty ships, those shallow drafts in a pitching sea is a formula for a miss. In hindsight, well, i think ill try 2-3 meters like you suggest. Target ship might flood more, and well, the deck gun is out of HE rounds.
As for my deck gun, uboat.net says an ixd2 has 150 rounds for its deck gun. So I modded mine to have 140 rounds. s 20 starshells, 40 AP, and 80HE instead of the typical 60HE. I did have a few misses, but most of my rounds hit, which surpised me. I let the AI gunner do the work this patrol, and while they usually miss a fair amount.. not this time out. WHich i found surpising.
