Default Ugh: KIA With Followup Questions

March 1942, 20th mission on my way to AM11 from Brest with U-132 Type 7C. West of Ireland, night time and my three top notch watch crew (WO included) are all in full health in the conning tower. Traveling at a TC of 64 at 8 knots due north. Weather clear, no rain, fog, clouds etc. With no warning from my on deck crew my "stealth meter" goes from green to red. I was in magnified map mode and on previous occasions a plane would show up on it to give me time to crash dive or at least a popup window would appear to ask me what to do. This time no warnings what so ever. So I press the C key for crash dive but it was too late. Caught on the surface by what I think was a PBY...I'm dead.

What the heck did I do wrong? TC too high I'm assuming, I don't know. Or the radar I had installed worked against me. I didn't stand a chance, now I'm fish food.

I know what you're ready to ask: What Mods? Ahhh, here leads to the next question. Up to now I have been playing SH3 with no mods, no Commander etc. Before I use any I purchased a two disc set from Frys with SH2 & SH3. I'd like to give SH2 a go now prior to adding the gazillion mods for SH3 which will take the game to a new level. I doubt I'll try SH2 after modding out SH3 so I thought I'd give it a shot now.

Is SH2 a good prequel or a waste of time? Any mods you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for your advice, opinions and sympathy. U-132 was a fine ship!

Edit: I should add (to clarify) all positions on conning tower were manned. Three watchman, one top notch sailor and my WO. Total of five.
