First of all, do you use any mods? If you use TWoS there is a built in featured tutorial that explains the Real Nav.

Here are basic steps:
1) Ask your navigator to calculate your position via dead reckoning;
2) Go to your map, you will see a X;
3) Take the tool you use to draw lines, you will see it has a round thing with numbers going from 1 to 360 (0=360);
4) Draw the line to where you want to go;
5) Read where the line crosses the round thing;
That is the course you want to order to go to.
