There is a fairly good-sized population of UK ex-pats living in the Los Angeles area, mostly around the sea-side city of Santa Monica. A few rather good pubs there serving fish and chips; the average price for a serving is about $9-10 US. There is also a small chain of fish and chips franchises named H. Salt serving up a decent product for about one or two dollars more...

The newspaper reference reminded me of a fish and chips shop that opened up in my old neighborhood in San Francisco in the late 60s. It was run by a married couple of English ex-pats. They served their F&C in newspaper as they had done back in England; they did this until they ran afoul of the local health and safety officials who cited them for using newspaper for wrapping. I recall how upset the F&C shop owners were when they had to stop using the newspaper; the husband, in particular, grumbled that "It just isn't right, It just isn't British!"...
