I just watched some U.S footage on youtube and it looked like that was all they were using on some of the smaller ships, junks and boats, barges.
Also I remember watching another documentary with a german boat doing the same thing at night, Off the U.S east coast, cruising slow firing up a burning tanker with the AA gun it was all tracer going out. Think it was off of Florida not sure why.
But yeah if I could use my B.A.R as well that would be great too
