Don't worry, they smoke.
I just whipped up a quick mission with a whole number of corvettes to take screenshots.
I didn't give them any waypoints so they aren't going anywhere and therefore aren't smoking. They had initial speed of like 10 knots though, which is why some have wakes.
Here, one I saw in my last patrol (with smoke):

I did the skins in psp9 and they open fine with that (maybe the program changed the tga properties somehow?) ... they work in the game, which is what matters.
