The end of the war brought about new ASW tech. Hedgehogs, by far, were the worst thing a sub could encounter. Then radar became more developed, and when that happened, U-boot snorkels were getting detected in the middle of the Atlantic!!
It was near impossible to stay surfaced.
The planes started attaching spotlights so they could hunt at night!
