SOmeone posted a mod for SH2 letting you play as french and american subs, and I sure hope SHIV doesn't put you in an american. The maximum depth was about 40m before it got to the "warning range". Which was only 10m The Critical depthe was much too shallow.

However, I absolutley would enjoy DC2 with the same textures and models in SHIII.
