Great point about Steam always being there to reload a game.
I'm not sure what happened or how, but somewhere during my mod soup I ended up with SH3 being patched to a point that it'll now run without Steam, as a standalone app. Again I'm not sure how it happened, so maybe someone else here can elaborate on that. Now I just copy the directory around and mod until my heart's content.
