Krasnaya Zvezda
September 17th, 1941
Red Army offensive operations in the northern and southern sectors of the front have been greatly successful. The recent recapture of Pskov and Vinnitsa have cost the fascist armies dearly both in manpower and materials. Fascist forces on the Dniester are on the verge of collapse thanks to the rapid exploitation of our glorious victory at the Battle of Kishinev, and Red Army units continue to make rapid progress towards strategic objectives in Romania.

Three more Guards divisions have been formed; two in the Western Front, one of which was a participant in the meat-grinder inside the city of Mogilev, along with the 1st Guards Mountain Division in the Southwestern Front.
It has come to my attention that vast amounts of support units and equipment which should have been at the front directly contributing to the killing of Germans have made their way to various Military District HQs which have little to do with combat operations. These include such trivial elements as a large percentage of our heavy artillery, sapper regiments and railroad construction brigades. Needless to say, the people responsible will be shot.
Leningrad Front: Finland resumed attacks north of Lake Ladoga but made little progress through the marshy terrain.

Northwestern Front: The German army launched a counterattack at Pskov. Our units managed to withstand three assaults, but the city eventually fell to the 6th Panzer Division. Further enemy attacks have been launched in other areas, successfully re-opening communication lines to their various trapped units. This has taken up most of the enemy's strength in the area, however, freeing us to launch an immediate counter-counteroffensive.
The 23rd Army in the north and the 8th Army in the south attacked both sides of the Pskov corridor and managed to link up at the center after fighting through the German 21st and 132nd Infantry Divisions, completely encircling German units around Pskov once again. The Totenkopf SS Motorized Division has been attacked near Ostrov and routed in disarray. Finally, a three-pronged assault was mounted on Pskov by the 32nd and 48th Armies with nearly 100,000 troops, driving the defending 6th Panzer Division out of the city once more with the loss of 44 of its tanks.
The 27th Army attempted to resume the encirclement of the Polizei SS and 86th Infantry Divisions but its attack on Limbazi bogged down with heavy casualties.

Western Front: German forces in the former Rudnya salient have switched direction and lunged at Vitebsk. They've arrived at the eastern outskirts of the city before our counterattack threw them back. We haven't managed to evict them from all of their gains, however, so their units will likely be able to resume the attack again soon.
In the south, the Germans continued their offensive by advancing 30 miles to the east, very nearly capturing the important railway junction at Krichev. The 13th and 33rd Armies launched our customary offensive to cut off their units, managing to drive back the German 167th Infantry Division and Großdeutschland Motorized Regiment, but they were halted by the 45th Infantry Division before managing to complete the encirclement (in my opinion, this was clearly the result of the 100th Flammpanzer Battalion's participation in the battle). Three more attacks were mounted on the salient by various units to the east but only one succeeded, dislodging the 10th Motorized Division from the front of the German advance. It remains to be seen how this situation develops.

Southwestern Front: German mechanized formations are still bogged down, so I've given the order to launch a large-scale counteroffensive aimed at destroying the threat to Kiev.
2/11th Panzer Division was driven out of Vinnitsa by Red Army units. It was pursued and driven into a corner in the woods northwest of the city along with 1/11th Panzer Division and 3/Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. All three regiments were promptly attacked and destroyed, resulting in the loss of about 11,000 German troops and 100 AFVs. Further to the north, the remaining two regiments of Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler were assaulted and driven back over 30 miles, cutting the Axis salient in half. In the west, we've managed to cut off the base of the salient again, despite Axis attempts to open a supply route to their units and a few failed attacks against German infantry positions. This should ensure our ability to retain the initiative for the next few weeks. As a result of these actions, the corridor to our units in Proskurov has doubled in width and the German positions have been reduced considerably.

Southern Front: Clear weather has allowed our units to resume exploitation at a rapid pace. The Romanian and German stragglers from the Dniester front and the group that attempted to outflank Proskurov have both been encircled by a combination of infantry, cavalry and mechanized units. Most of the Romanian and German air bases and supply caches in Moldavia have also been overrun during the advance. Our units are now in a position to seriously threaten the German right flank.

In Romania, full-scale pursuit continues as the 9th Army moves its operations deeper into the country. We are now 50 miles from Bucharest and 40 from Constanta with no opposition yet in sight.

Overall Situation: The situation on the Western Front is somewhat worrying, but the rest is doing better than average for now.

Our air forces have been becoming somewhat less incompetent lately, probably thanks to their commanders being shot. The disparity in kill ratios has dropped as a result.
