Welcome to the game!

IMHO there are not essential and not essential mods. It all depends on what you are looking for. I will not speak about realism vs gameplay, but how mod kept my interest in the game for a year now.

Initially (in choronological order):

-Stock Game
-Harbour Traffic (later Unified Campaign)
-Holywood U-boat Damage
-Any additional ship I could get my hands on
-Sound mods
-Some graphics mods
-My mods / fixes
-Thermal Layers

Now

- Grey Wolves [Includes additional ships, Holywood, sound, gfx]
- Unified Campaign for GW
- My mods / fixes
- Additional ships

Future

- GW plus all of the above
- Random / Chaos mods (new Holywood and endless other possibilities)
- Next version of NYGM ship damage model
- Even more extra ships
- Victory Mod (I *have* to play some missions in this)

BTW, I consider the following applications essential: JSGME (mod enabler), SH3 COmmander, SH3Gen, SH3 Weather. These are not mods, but external applications. SH3Cdr's latest version icludes Termal Layers.

My best advice would be not to install all mods at one, but one by one.

Best,
