I used to do this exact same thing. I set my torp just below the keel though and set it to magnetic, to make sure it doesn't bounce of either side of the ships bow.
With grey wolves they have stopped going off though... I have used the external camera to confirm, and the torps glide right under without blowing up.
Last time this happened I obvoiusly had to dive really quickly... but about two minutes later the stray torpedo I had already forgotten about hit a merchant in the convoy! So it wasn't a total loss.
Still, the torps aint blowing up under the escorts keels!?
