I run Windows Firewall and Avast anti virus free edition on my Win8.1 and no problems to date.
Window Defender dose not seem as good on the anti virus front but Windows firewall is. Ran avast for years now and happy with it, had to dump Comodo firewall a few months ago for some strange reason I got a update and it slowed my PC down slower than a snail.
But I take it your talking about Win10.
