Don't know about the captain....but apparently Admiral Lutjens thought the mission doomed from the beginning. Feeling that the British where closing in (about the time the Royal Navy had lost him) He broadcast a long radio message detailing
Bismarck's victory over the
Hood the previous day. Berlin told him to keep quiet and observe radio silence...but by then it was too late.
Bismarck was DFed and her doom sealed.
